What We Do...

Myofascial Release

Myofascial release is a form of soft tissue therapy used to treat somatic dysfunction and accompanying pain and restriction of motion.  Fascia surrounds every muscle group and every muscle cell in your body.  It is an incredibly strong tissue that behaves differently than muscle tissue.  This style of bodywork feels different than a relaxation (Swedish) massage.  It is however, painless as well as deeply relaxing.  Although you may book this style as a 'menu' choice, your therapist will listen for the language you use about your pain during an intake before your session.  Your language about your history with any condition plus our skill in palpating soft tissue will enable us to construct the massage session.

Ortho-Bionomy

A comprehensive system of healing that uses the body's self-correcting reflexes to stimulate its innate healing abilities. Gentle touch, movement and positions of comfort are used to release tension, allowing the body to let go from within, initiate internal healing, and restore balance. The system includes techniques for body alignment and postural re-education.  Results are long lasting and integrated in a holistic way, as only the body can do for itself.

Muscle Restore Technique for Migraine

Specifically for migraines, these sessions focus on neck, back, and glute muscles. All of these muscles can contribute to recurring migraine patterns, but they can also be coaxed into loosening their grip. Approximately 85% of clients receive relief from migraines in just 6 weeks.  Past clients have agreed to answer your questions; please call for the list.  Six weekly sessions of 30 minutes each are recommended.

Hot Stone

Hot Stone Massage combines Swedish relaxation therapy with bodywork focused on specific problem areas.  The wonderful therapeutic benefits of heat provide relief and relaxation simultaneously.

Ayurvedic Treatments
  • Abhyanga
For thousands of years Ayurveda has been a complete system of medicine, originating in India.  It is very complex and physicians spend years earning their degrees just as Western doctors do.  Ayurvedic medicine places particular emphasis upon prevention of illness and includes protocols for diet, nutrition, herbs, exercise, and body treatments. Two spa/health treatments are abhyanga massage and shirodhara.  Abhyanga uses copious amounts of warmed sesame oil  to create a rhythmical, choreographed massage. It is deeply relaxing for those who have the most trouble doing so. The treatment can be done with one therapist or as a synchronized version done with two therapists.

  • Shirodhara
Shirodhara is a treatment that can induce deep meditative states by allowing warmed oil to stream upon the forehead, or third eye.  It is prescribed by Ayurvedic physicians to relieve anxiety, depression, headaches and insomnia.  This unusual treatment is literally thousands of years old as spoken of in Vedic texts. Western practitioners are studying its ability to stimulate alpha and theta brain waves; both necessary for the body's healing state to be optimal.

Lymphatic Drainage

The lymphatic system is significantly different from the circulatory and muscle systems of the body.  This modality differs profoundly from other styles. Its purpose is to amplify the natural flow of lymph. The lymph system contains our immune cells, hormones, and metabolic waste products. It is essential for this system to move efficiently.  Lymph congestion can result from injuries, surgeries, tight bras, lack of movement and of course, age.  Sometimes the swollen or sagging areas of the neck, eyes or axial (armpit) regions are simply sluggish lymph.  This very gentle technique moves fluid efficiently; an old injury that always seems to remain swollen can respond to just a few lymphatic sessions.  The work is used with breast cancer patients (who have undergone node dissections) with great success.  Estheticians also use lymphatic work to help the sagging tissue under the eyes.  Post-surgery LDT can eliminate swelling, thus speeding the recovery process.  Surgeons in Europe have been prescribing it for years and it is becoming a more commonly recommended treatment in the U.S.  We will teach you some rudimentary lymphatic strokes that you can use between sessions.

Cross Fiber Friction

Developed for the treatment of soft tissue lesions by the British osteopath, Dr. James Cyriax, deep transverse friction effectively reduces fibrosis and encourages the formation of strong, pliable scar tissue at the site of healing injuries. This technique reduces the crystalline roughness that forms between tendons and their sheaths that can result in painful tendonitis.  It can also prevent or soften myofascial adhesions.
A deep, oil-less friction stroke, cross-fiber friction is administered with a braced finger or thumb moving across the grain of a muscle, tendon or ligament. The therapist's thumb and the client's skin move as one over the exact site of the lesion with sufficient sweep and duration to create a mechanical effect on the tissue treated.  The stroke is applied at the site of the lesion, at right angles to the fibers, and is broad enough to separate the fibers without bouncing over them.  The treatment is painful, though always within tolerance, and is never applied during the initial inflammatory stage in an acute injury.

The first treatment should be conservative, lasting one or two minutes only, followed by a day of rest for the treated part.  The treatment is resumed on alternate days until the pain abates and full usage is returned, usually within 3 to 10 sessions.

Pre-/Post-Natal Massage

Celebrate gestation through touch.  Hormones during pregnancy can be a challenge to your structure.  Hormones cause ligaments to soften; muscles respond by tightening, creating discomfort.  Massage brings these opposing forces into balance.  In addition, massage triggers the relaxation response.  One effect of this response is greater nutrient flow to the baby, or growing a better baby!
